Valley Village has no big commercial strip of its own and no mall. On paper it also has no farmers market. Its community calendar runs on two small places that keep a schedule. One is a Saturday market in the parking lot of a church on Colfax Avenue. The other is a row of storefronts on Magnolia Boulevard that open their doors on Thursday evenings. Know when those two are running and most of the neighborhood's calendar falls into place, including Light Up Valley Village on December 12.
The market with another neighborhood's name on it
California's directory of certified farmers markets, dated October 1, 2026, lists a market at 5000 Colfax Ave. at Addison. It runs Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., year-round. The state calls it the North Hollywood Farmers Market, and the manager on file is Jim Dunn. The Daily News gave the same Saturday hours in its August 6, 2026 roundup of things to do in the Valley. The market's own contact page lists a 2:30 p.m. close instead. If you're coming late, the earlier time from the state and the newspaper is the safer one to plan around.
The address is Faith Presbyterian Church, and the Neighborhood Council Valley Village calls it something else. In the council's write-ups, the Saturday market at 5000 Colfax is the Valley Village Farmers Market. Neither name is wrong. Each one reflects who is doing the counting.
The market's website describes a nonprofit market with:
- California produce, breads, nuts, cheeses, juice and cookies
- Ethnic foods and a food court
- Crafts and an Artist Village
- Live entertainment and children's activities
The church also houses a second neighborhood institution. Village Arts Theatre, a nonprofit, keeps its arts space at Faith Presbyterian, 5000 Colfax Ave. It runs youth theater, visual-arts programming, an after-school program and an after-school choir. The Saturday market and Village Arts share one address, and that matters in December.
The church's Social Hall is also where the neighborhood council holds its in-person board meetings. The next one is October 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. The market lot, the arts space and the council's meeting room all sit at one address.
Three doors on Magnolia
The second anchor is smaller. The neighborhood council's calendar gives its address as a range: 12437 to 12441 Magnolia Blvd. The council describes a monthly Sip & Shop there, presented by the local businesses. Here is what's behind those three numbers:
- 12437 Magnolia Blvd, The Gift Muse. A woman-owned gift shop selling candles, barware, stationery, books, coffee and tea, and a mahjong section. It's open Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed Mondays.
- 12439 Magnolia Blvd, The Plost Office. Private mailboxes, notary service, DMV registration, live-scan fingerprinting and printing, with weekday hours.
- 12441 Magnolia Blvd, Miss Shannon's Sewing. The studio's site lists this address for small-group sewing, embroidery and machine-sewing classes. Check its current class schedule before you go.
Across the street, at 12460 Magnolia Blvd, is Joe Peep's NY Pizza. It serves pizza, pasta, sandwiches and wings, with pickup hours every day of the week. Thai food comes from Rustic Spoon, which lists a Valley Village location and online ordering. Both come up again in December.
On a regular weekday these are errands: a gift, a notarized form, a slice of pizza. The Thursday evenings make them something more.
First Thursdays, and the October week built around a cause
The Gift Muse says plainly how the block works. Its site promotes "first-Thursday Sip & Shop nights" on its Instagram feed. The most recent regular one was Thursday, October 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. If the first-Thursday pattern holds, the next ones fall on November 5 and December 3. Dates can shift, so check @shopthegiftmuse before you head over.
This month the block is adding a second evening, and the shop's announcement explains the format better than a description could:
"Come out and SHOP FOR A CAUSE! @twirlsandtwigs and @shopthegiftmuse are teaming up! Between October 22-25, 20% of sales will be donated to @wesparksupport! Join us on Thursday, October 22nd from 5-8pm for a kick-off Sip and Shop! We will also have a handful of sidewalk vendors too!"
That's from The Gift Muse's Instagram, as shown on the shop's website. The fundraiser is set for Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25, at the same 12437 to 12441 Magnolia addresses.
That week shows how the block runs. One shop teams up with a second, Twirls and Twigs. They pick a charity, put sidewalk vendors out front, and turn a stretch of storefronts into an evening event, without a business district behind them. The neighborhood council lists the result on its civic calendar next to its own board meetings.
December 12 is the day both anchors share
All year, the Colfax market and the Magnolia shops run on separate days of the week. One day a year, a single schedule uses both.
The neighborhood council's event listing sets the 19th annual Light Up Valley Village for Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The day runs in two parts:
- 10 a.m. to noon, Valley Village Farmer's Market, 5000 Colfax Ave. It starts during regular Saturday market hours.
- 5 to 8 p.m., Magnolia Blvd and Whitsett Ave. Holiday shopping, treats, free food and Santa.
The council's Student Committee runs a toy drive at both locations. The council also collects food for the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry.
Last year's event shows how the two anchors fit together. The council's recap of the December 6, 2025 celebration reported close to 400 people. The morning at the market had coffee and treats, plus live entertainment sponsored by Village Arts, the nonprofit that's based in the same church. In the evening at Whitsett and Magnolia, merchants opened their doors and offered discounts, Joe Peep's and Rustic Spoon provided food, there was live music, and Santa visited. The recap's photo set includes one captioned "Village Arts Choir."
Every piece of the event comes from something that already runs during the year. The market already fills 5000 Colfax every Saturday morning. Village Arts already runs its after-school choir out of the church. The Magnolia shops already know how to put on an evening because they do it most months. Joe Peep's sits across the street from the Sip & Shop storefronts.
